Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
What is MLD ?
Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a subtle, gentle, and non-invasive
technique with a profound impact on the body. Its primary goal is to
reduce swelling and inflammation by promoting lymph flow, helping to clear areas of excess fluid buildup. Developed in France in 1932 by Emil and Estrid Vodder, MLD has become the most well-known manual technique for enhancing lymph circulation and supporting tissue drainage.
When performed with the correct pressure, direction, and speed, MLD can significantly aid recovery and improve fluid movement. Beyond its physical benefits, it also has a calming effect on the nervous system and supports overall well-being.
What Does MLD Do?
As its name suggests, Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) works directly with the lymphatic system—a network of vessels responsible for removing excess fluid, proteins, viruses, and bacteria. This gentle technique supports cellular waste removal while delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to the cells.
Is It Painful?
No, quite the opposite. MLD is a light, gentle, and rhythmic technique designed to be soothing and relaxing.
What is CDT ?
CDT or Complete Decongestive Therapy is a specialized form of MLD requiring additional training and experience. Designed specifically for patients with Lypmhedema, it is an intensive program that combines many different treatment approaches, including bandaging, compression garments, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and self care. If you have Lymphedema, or suspect you are a candidate for CDT please contact us here for a consultation.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that's usually drained through the body's lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and genitals.
Lymph nodes are an important part of your lymphatic system. Lymphedema can be caused by cancer treatments that remove or damage your lymph nodes. Any type of problem that blocks the drainage of lymph fluid can cause lymphedema.

Full Chest & Breast Massage
Breast and chest massage, included in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), can help reduce swelling and promote healthy circulation in both the blood and lymphatic systems, supporting overall breast tissue health. This therapy also helps open the anterior torso, improve breathing, and alleviate stress.
IIncorporating breast and chest massage with MLD into wellness treatments can be especially beneficial for individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment, recovering from breast cancer surgery, or those who have had a mastectomy. For those at risk of or dealing with secondary lymphedema (especially in stage 0 or 1), MLD can help improve lymphatic flow, reduce swelling, and prevent the progression of this condition.
For individuals with breast cancer or those who have had surgery, this type of massage offers a powerful way to reconnect with the body, aiding emotional healing and acceptance of the changes resulting from surgery. It can also support overall lymphatic health by addressing any early-stage lymphedema or other related concerns.
Performed by a certified and specially trained therapist, this massage can be a deeply restorative practice, fostering a sense of wholeness, self-care, and healing.
FAQs - Manual Lymphatic Drainage
-
Yes, it can. Bruising occurs when red blood cells and cellular debris become trapped in the tissues. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) supports the body's natural healing process by accelerating the removal of these substances, helping to reduce discoloration and speed up recovery.
-
No, when performed correctly, MLD is not painful. The Vodder Technique, the most respected method of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) worldwide, uses gentle, rhythmic, and precise movements to stimulate lymph flow without increasing blood circulation. It is not a traditional massage but a specialized, advanced bodywork modality designed to support the body's natural detoxification and healing processes.

This varies for each individual. During your initial consultation, we’ll determine the best treatment plan based on your specific needs.
Some clients find that 1–6 sessions are enough for post-operative recovery, while those undergoing abdominal liposuction often benefit from 10–12 sessions. In some cases, more than 12 sessions may be necessary. Clients who have multiple procedures, such as liposuction combined with a tummy tuck or a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), may require additional treatments.
To make treatment more accessible, I offer packages of 3, 5, or 10 sessions at a reduced rate.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can support the body's natural detoxification process by stimulating the lymphatic system, which helps remove waste and excess fluids. Some people incorporate MLD into their detox routine alongside diet, fasting, supplements, or sauna use. However, it's important to understand that MLD does not "flush out toxins" or directly impact weight loss. Instead, it enhances lymphatic circulation, which may contribute to overall wellness and a sense of lightness.
While some people believe that full body detoxes provide health benefits, they are not necessary for most people. The body already has its own highly efficient detoxification system to eliminate toxins from the body.
Typically, people who are healthy typically do not require additional help with detoxification. That said there are some standard non MLD tips that you can incorporate into your daily routine that can help.
Here are some ideas for how to support the body’s detoxification system.Stop smoking or drinking
Stay hydrated
Eat a nutrient dense diet - avoid carbohydrates, added sugars - look for foods high in antioxidants, such as berries and nuts and dark leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, and chard
Improve air quality - Eliminate mold, dust regularly, consider an air purifier
Get enough sleep

Probably not. While many spas advertise MLD or MLD-inspired treatments for bloating and weight loss, that’s not really how the body works. The lymphatic system helps move and remove excess fluids, but primarily in cases where there is an atypical buildup due to a mechanical issue, such as post-surgical swelling or lymphedema.
That said, MLD is not harmful and may leave you feeling lighter or less bloated after a session. If you find it beneficial, I’m happy to provide treatment—but it’s important to know that this is not a result we specifically promote.

No, a referral is not required. While many doctors recommend MLD for post-surgical recovery or specific conditions, you are welcome to book a session on your own without a referral.

Healing Hands Bodywork is considered an out-of-network provider with all insurance companies, meaning I do not contract directly with insurance or submit claims on your behalf. However, I can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
It’s important to contact your insurance company to inquire about your out-of-network benefits, as coverage varies. Some clients are fully reimbursed, while others may not receive any reimbursement, depending on their plan.
I can also accept HSA and FSA cards for payment in many instances. To help facilitate this process, I will provide you with a claim form or superbill. I recommend reaching out to your insurance provider in advance to understand your benefits. For a helpful worksheet on this, click here.
